Stunning views of the countryside, walking through pastures and exploring Brimham Rocks
I won't lie, I was exhausted by the end of this hike. It was raining, muddy and with me beginner hiker, it was certainly a bit of a challenge. However, this hike turned out to be my most rewarding one yet and pushed me. Plus we got to spy some llamas and alpacas!
Why you’ll enjoy this hike:
Starting at Brimham Rocks is a fantastic jumping off point. With the starting point being at a National Trust site you will either need to pay entry or have a membership for entry but you do get to wander round these incredible rocks that were formed by a river over 100 million years ago. Beyond the starting point you will be hiking through pastures and down country lanes past some really cute cottages. There is also a section of the hike where the path runs alongside a the River Nidd where we didn't see another person.
Points of interest:
You will go past a llama and alpaca farm where they conduct trekking sessions. If you're in the area for more than a day it's worth checking out.
When to go:
For this hike I would definitely recommend avoiding rainy weather unless you like a muddy challenge. Walking through actively used pastures with the farm animals means you're mostly likely going to be getting stuck in the mud more than once. A clear sunny day is perfect for this hike and with that you'll also get some amazing views of the landscape. It's a moderate to challenging walk depending how experienced you are.
What to pack:
I've created a page on the site for easy access to a handy packing list which you can access here. But as a side note, if you anticipate getting a bit muddy, I would recommend having a plan for food. Bringing a few snacks and a packed lunch is recommended as you will be tired after this walk. My friend and I had planned to go to a pub but considering how sweaty and muddy we were, we opted to drive over an hour home, shower and go out for the biggest pizza instead.
Final thoughts:
The route from National Trust did get a little confusing on point 8 as we felt the instructions were a little unclear but we figured it out in the end. The plus point being that we still had signal and could use Google Maps to figure out which direction to go in. Other than that, this was a really nice countryside hike through pastures, around Brimham Rocks and had sections of proper paths or roads. The views were stunning, I just wish it hadn't been raining.
