Views of the sea, remembering Captain Cook and stunning views of the North York Moors
A moderate Yorkshire hike for couples, families, friends and solo explorers wishing to get some fresh air and some exercise.
Why you’ll enjoy this Yorkshire hike:
If you're looking for a hike with a good incline and stunning views of the North York Moors then this is a perfect hike. It took just over 3 hours to complete at a steady pace and had a combination of dirt trails, paved roads and hiking paths. It's a good moderate hike, one that you can easily do solo as there is a lot of people around so you won't feel isolated.
Points of interest:
The route we took walked around the base of Roseberry Topping before heading over the hills along to Captain Cooks Monument. There are some fantastic views all around for the majority of the hike and at points you will also see the North Sea in the distance.
When to go:
We got all the seasons on this hike. There were some muddy patches and dry and we managed it without much difficulty. I will say that going up to the top of Roseberry Topping can be quite steep and slippery so be careful in rainy weather. Hiking poles will come in useful for this hike. The car park also got rather busy
What to pack:
I've created a page on the site for easy access to a handy packing list which you can access here. Pack your walking boots or shoes and hiking poles will come in useful. Make sure to grab your waterproof. I found with the weather changes layers were a good option.
Final thoughts:
This was a great 3 hour hike near Middlesborough and not too far from the sea. I highly recommend heading to the coast for fish and chips after for a much needed reward. The views were stunning but be prepared for quick weather changes. The Roseberry Topping and Captain Cooks Monument route is linked below with OS Maps.
